Understanding the science that makes cannabis beneficial as a medical alternative

Proof of the positive attributes of cannabis can be found in its scientific makeup

It’s true that part of the population is already well aware of the great benefits that can be found through cannabis, especially its compounds, cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). However, this does not mean that the science behind the properties of cannabis is understood. In fact, it is more complex than many people might imagine and yet there is a lack of studies and research that can really concretize the knowledge of this plant.

Both CBD and THC are recognized as the source of the medical efficacy of cannabis, but it must be clear that these are only two of the 500 compounds that the plant contains. Of these, at least 100 are classified as phytocannabinoids, which means that they have a strong relationship with the cannabinoid receptors within our central nervous system. CBD and THC are included in this classification.

THC is characterized too much by its psychoactive effects, while CBD is more related to the merit of treating various conditions, such as anxiety, depression, and inflammation. As time has passed, scientific studies have been able to find compounds that were previously unknown, including tetrahydrocannabiforol (THCP), which is apparently 33 times stronger than the properties of THC.

Lately, cannabis has been linked to positively combatting cancer. Although much research remains to be done, it has been shown that THC is able to slow the development of colitis-associated colon cancer in mice, mainly by inhibiting the release of the pro-inflammatory protein interleukin-22. So far, there have been studies with different results, which has led researchers to delve deeper into the subject. Therefore, it would not be surprising if, in a few months, we see more consistent results.
