Using cannbis to treat depression can be a healthier, safer solution than lab-created pills

Depression is a common mental health condition that is associated with many internal and external factors, and its prevalence around the world finds approximately 17.3 million adults who are currently suffering from at least one major depressive episode, according to a report based on data from 2017. The surge in the number of cases of people suffering from this mental health condition led large pharmaceutical companies to profit from medications created specifically to treat depression, such as Zoloft (brand name of the drug known as Sertraline). This is one of the first options doctors choose to give to patients, but, with the growth the cannabis industry has been having during recent years, cannabis might be a better and more effective alternative than long-time used medications.

Zoloft isn’t used only to treat depression, but also to help people deal with anxiety, panic attacks, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCDs) and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD), among others. Sertraline is part of a class of medications that work as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), which targets the chemical imbalances within the brains of patients with this ailment. Besides the fact that they are created in a lab, these medications often come with unwanted side effects, such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, hallucinations, trouble concentrating, decreased libido, aggressiveness, diarrhea, fever and convulsions.

On the other hand, cannabidiol (CBD), presents an alternative for getting equally good results, effectively and without those dreadful side effects that can also be life-impairing. One great advantage is that it really doesn’t have an intoxicating effect in the body as it has no psychotropic properties. Multiple studies have proven that many patients currently using regular drugs are seeing the light with this treatment that, for some, has been life-changing.
