Research gives Alzheimer’s patients a reason to trust cannabis to treat their symptoms

Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that causes problems with a person’s memory, thinking, and behavior. Its symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time. Currently, Alzheimer’s has no cure, but there are treatments for the symptoms available, in which cannabidiol (CBD) has excelled. Many studies continue to analyze the relationship between mental illness and the famous cannabis compound, yielding extremely positive results in these patients.

There are several scientific reasons why CBD should be considered an effective treatment for Alzheimer’s; it is an antioxidant and stimulates neurogenesis. Cognitive decline is one of the greatest fears of older adults. In fact, it is estimated that at least one in three people dies from Alzheimer’s or other dementia. Fortunately, more and more research is being done and wonderful natural treatments such as CBD have been developed.

Conditions such as Alzheimer’s usually involve inflammation of neural tissue. This inflammation is thought to produce a defense mechanism in the early stages of the disease.

Research conducted a couple of years ago found that CBD in cannabis acts as a potent anti-inflammatory. The compound causes the CB2 receptors to disallow the migration of immune cells, preventing inflammation. This slows down the progression of brain lesions caused by Alzheimer’s disease.

But CBD not only prevents inflammation by suppressing CB2 receptor activity, but it also prevents the release of a protein called GFAP that causes clumping and inflammation. When the secretion of the GFAP protein is increased, the transmission of information from neurons is altered, which contributes to degenerative damage. But with the administration of CBD, the overexpression of GFAP is decreased and the inflammatory reaction is prevented.

Another study found that CBD has an effect that allows the regulation of enzymes that protect against oxidative stress. That is why CBD acts as an antioxidant, helping to reduce the problems associated with oxidative stress in Alzheimer’s disease and eliminating free radicals.
