More research is showing just how important cannabis is for the body

As it became legal in the last couple of years, there has been more research done on cannabidiol (CBD) due to its anti-inflammation properties, and it is just a matter of time before researchers turn their eyes to the benefits of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), too. Based on the results from recent studies, CBD might have a role in decrease inflammation and virus infections. This was the conclusion reached by researchers at the CECAD Cluster of Excellence in Aging Research of the University of Cologne, University of Texas Health Science Center and the Francis Crick Institute in London. And it seems to be the mystery revolves around proteins and how they can act facing viruses is being understand better.

In this study, published in the journal Nature, the scientists discovered that the protein defending the body against incoming viruses, ZBP1, gets activated after sensing an unusual form of cellular genetic material. The genetic material of ZBP1 contains double-strained DNA and RNA molecules with an “unusual left-handed double helix structure.” Once these usual materials are sensed, the protein activates mechanisms to lead to cell death and inflammation.

Regarding CBD effects on this protein, a 2009 study published in the peer-reviewed journal Future Medicinal Chemistry said that “The cannabinoid system has been shown both in vivo and in vitro to be involved in regulating the immune system through its immunomodulatory properties. Cannabinoids can either directly inhibit tumor growth or suppress inflammation and tumor angiogenesis.” This fact could mean that the activity of these proteins could be regulated by CBD as well and enhance its work in the body.
