The University of Rhode Island is testing the cannabis education waters with a seven-week online course

The cannabis industry started from scratch, with not a lot of studies that could demonstrate the positive effects that made people continue using the plant. As the industry continues booming, there is an increasing need for more research and professionals in the sector that can bring fundamental knowledge. Many universities have launched different programs and degrees related to cannabis science or production, and there is one more institution to add to that list. The University of Rhode Island (URI) will offer a seven-week online course that will be part of the College of Pharmacy.

Starting this fall, URI students can get a certification in cannabis. “You don’t even have to be a science major to enter,” said Professor Navindra Seeram. This online course will go over the science behind the growing cannabis industry, as well as covering topics like growing and dispensing. “We see this program as also debunking myths that are prevalent right now in the industry,” said Seeram.

The course offers the chance for students to learn how to create their own marijuana-based products, run a dispensary and other related topics. “We see students who are coming in – they could either be people who are working in the industry, people who are just interested in sales in the dispensary, management and lab techniques,” explained Seeram.

” [The] Industry is expanding and exploding I think,” added Seeram. This certificate program aims to prepare students to enter the cannabis industry, which is still in need of additional workforce, and that eventually could outpace jobs in the healthcare and tech industries.
