Properly storing marijuana to keep it fresh

Proper storage will ensure the marijuana maintains its potency

The days of storing marijuana in plastic baggies are over – relegated to the same location as bell-bottom jeans and Pop Rocks. The 80s are over and it’s time for something different, especially for something as important as marijuana. Not properly storing a supply can cause it to lose its potency, rendering it less effective and no more beneficial than a placebo. When it comes to cannabis storage, make sure it’s done right.

Like fine cigars, marijuana needs to be treated with a certain amount of respect. Several factors must be considered for proper storage, including humidity, airflow, light and heat. Light can be the most detrimental to marijuana maintaining its potency and direct sunlight is the worst. Since artificial light can also affect the strength, it’s best to avoid any significant amount of light and light-proof containers are most often recommended.

Cool, dark and dry places are the best. The back of a closet or a cabinet is an ideal location and has the added benefit of keeping it out of the reach of curious young hands. The temperature should be kept between 60-70 Fahrenheit, and an airtight container, to avoid changes in relative humidity, should be used. The relative humidity should be maintained at as close to 62% as possible.

Not using airtight containers can also allow moisture to seep in, which can cause mold to grow, especially if the temperature reaches more than 70F. It’s important to try to maintain a level temperature at all times to help prevent bacteria growth.

Some people have turned to storing their supplies in freezers, but this isn’t recommended. It may not be as detrimental to potency as high temperatures are, but it can cause the plant’s trichomes to become brittle and snap off, which could result in lower strength.

Treating marijuana with care and reducing its exposure to elements that can affects its performance will guarantee that the positive characteristics of the plant are always there when you need them.
