Affinity Bio Partners will explore the use of cannabis in treating diabetes symptoms

Diabetic neuropathy is a type of nerve damage that can occur if you have diabetes. High blood glucose can damage nerves throughout the body. The nerves in the legs and feet are most affected by this type of disease. In order to bring relief to these patients, Affinity Bio Partners, a US clinical research organization, announced last week the start of a study focusing on a cannabis-based treatment.

The idea is to have a natural alternative treatment that can serve to mitigate the problems caused by diabetic nerve pain, which is experienced by at least half of all patients with diabetes. While it is true that some patients may experience mild symptoms, others may not be as lucky. Diabetic neuropathy is quite painful, and can end up causing disability in different parts of the body.

Cannabis has been recognized for having great positive effects on diabetes. Studies have indicated that the use of marijuana is currently associated with lower blood glucose levels and increased insulin sensitivity (both factors that indicate good blood glucose control). From here is born the idea of being able to investigate cannabis in more depth to see if it also manages to have positive effects with respect to diabetic neuropathy.

“I am very excited to be working on this clinical study with Dr. Bryan Doner and the Serena Group,” says Affinity Bio CEO Christina DiArcangelo. “The future of medical cannabis and cannabinoids as medical treatments depends on getting the clinical studies right. It’s time for companies to invest their money in conducting clinical studies that demonstrate the safety and efficacy of their products.”

DiArcangelo has 22 years of experience in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. The union of his experience with Affinity Bio Partners scientists could bring a solution for all patients suffering from this painful pathology.
