Studies are going to support existing evidence about the merits of cannabis use for better health

Antipsychotics belong to psychotropic drugs. These drugs are part of the psychiatric treatments dedicated to the care of certain types of severe obsessive disorders and psychoses in their different types, such as schizophrenia. Their function is to alleviate, diminish and control psychotic symptoms, such as delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized language and behavior caused by this disease. While they can be effective in some cases, their side effects are sometimes not at all desirable, so a new study suggests that cannabidiol (CBD) may be seen as a safe, natural, and effective new treatment.

It’s no secret that CBD has been a treatment that has captivated many of today’s researchers. Those studying mental problems have focused on this compound because they believe it has the ability to improve brain health. Through a study supported by Wellcome, researchers have considered that CBD could offer an innovative new treatment for people with psychosis.

Schizophrenia is one of several psychotic illnesses that affect millions of people worldwide. While current medicine continues to create common antipsychotics, such as quetiapine or olanzapine, these drugs do not work for many people and the side effects associated with them can be severe.

Fortunately, recent studies have determined that CBD is capable of undermining the symptoms of psychosis without the need to alter the quality of life in the short term. Unlike other drugs that affect the dopamine system, CBD works in part by modulating the endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for modulating neurotransmitters, metabolism, and inflammation.

These findings have now also been supported by the study led by Professor Philip McGuire of Oxford University and supported by colleagues at King’s College London. This group of experts will use all this data to investigate whether CBD can be used not only to treat established psychosis but also to prevent the onset of psychosis in people at high risk of developing it. In simple words, more results on CBD may be on the horizon.
