Senator Schumer is ready to push for marijuana reform once again

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, along with all of his colleagues, will be releasing a draft bill discussing important aspects of a long-awaited bill to finally legalize marijuana at the federal level tomorrow. Two sources briefed on the plans said that Schumer, Senator Cory Booker and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden will hold a press conference tomorrow to present a draft version of what will be titled the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act.

It has been made clear that the details of the provisions of the proposal are not yet available, but the main objective of this draft is to start a formal conversation where they can unveil what will be a presentation of the bill at a later date, in other words, to lay the groundwork for the ideas to be clarified little by little.

There is no doubt that advocates are quite excited as they have greatly anticipated the legislation that Schumer has repeatedly said was coming soon. He, Wyden and Booker first promised earlier this year that the bill would be ready in the first part of 2021.

Since then, Schumer has pulled out all the stops to consistently advocate for cannabis reform in different parts of the country. Beyond simply putting prohibition aside, Schumer made it clear that the proposal he and his colleagues are working on will “ensure restorative justice, public health and implement responsible taxation and regulation,” something similar to what New York lawmakers relied on when they got a legalization bill enacted by Governor Andrew Cuomo not too long ago.
