Stricter controls over the cannabis ecosystem in Nevada are coming

A new regulatory office has taken over the regulation of all of Nevada’s cannabis industry as of yesterday. The new office is the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board (CCB), which is officially fully authorized to take over all things concerning cannabis in the Silver State. This reform to the cannabis legislation came from a bill signed by Governor Steve Sisolak last year; it was actually one of the governor’s top priorities during his 2019 legislative session.

Since the bill was signed, authorities have been working on putting together what was required to run the office, including appointments of the members of the new board. This past February, Sisolak appointed former Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael Douglas as the chairman of the CCB, and former Gaming Control Board chairman Dennis Neilander is another addition the governor made to the board. That same month, Las Vegas banker Jerrie Merritt was named by the governor as the third member of the board, out of a total of five members who need to be appointed.

There are still two more board positions to be filled, which is something the governor has to do himself. The remaining two positions need to be filled by a medical professional and a person that has both knowledge and experience working in the cannabis industry. Besides the five members to create the board, the governor will also name eight more members to join a Cannabis Advisory Commission, which will have CCB Executive Director Tyler Klimas as the leader. This commission is tasked with making recommendations to the CCB.
