Research shows that cannabis companies need to better align their services to feed the market

Leafreport, a company that reviews a large number of products based on cannabidiol (CBD), undertook the task of conducting a study on the famous compound. According to the company’s statement in a press release, it found that quality, transparency, and brand safety in the CBD industry are apparently “stagnant and deteriorating in several critical respects.”

After examining more than 4,000 products belonging to 188 CBD brands, the investigation found that only 7% of the brands tested for microbes, heavy metals and pesticides in their products. The company at least indicates that’s a positive jump compared to the 1% found in a study conducted last year when nearly 3,000 products from 136 brands were reviewed.

According to the study, at least 20% of the brands do not carry out any kind of purity test to detect pesticides, microbes, or heavy metals. This represents a 5% decrease compared to 2021. More than 40% of brands that test the potency of almost all their products and make third-party laboratory tests available to consumers were maintained during the recent study. This is a clear sign that the industry’s commitment to potency and purity testing remains stagnant.

In addition, Leafreport reported that about 22 of the 188 brands had all of their products within acceptable levels of potency variation. “It is unacceptable that so many CBD companies fail to perform the most basic tests to ensure that their customers’ health is not compromised,” said Gal Shapira, product manager at Leafreport. The specialist concluded by saying that solid third-party testing should certainly be a priority for all CBD companies that are serious about transparency and customer safety.
