Lobsters and marijuana, a perfect combination

A restaurant in Maine puts a shocking twist on preparing lobster

As marijuana continues to make waves as a culinary favorite with a long list of possibilities, a restaurant in Maine is looking to pair lobster with marijuana. It is a unique creation that results in the lobster being either boiled or steamed – and baked at the same time.

Lobsters have been taken straight from the tank to the pot live for generations. Many argue that it is the best way to ensure that all of the flavor is intact. However, the practice has come under fire lately by certain animal protection groups, who claim that it is animal cruelty and shouldn’t be allowed. Charlotte’s Legendary Lobster Pound in Maine has a possible solution to the complaints and gets the lobsters high before preparing them.

The practice is still in the experimental stage. Charlotte Gill, the restaurant’s owner, explains, “I feel bad that when lobsters come here there is no exit strategy. It’s a unique place and you get to do such unique things but at the expense of this little creature. I’ve really been trying to figure out how to make it better.”

In the first experiment conducted by the restaurant, a lobster was placed in a box containing a few inches of water. Marijuana smoke was blown into the box through the water, resulting in the lobster becoming significantly less aggressive over the course of the next three weeks and, when placed in a tank with other lobsters, didn’t try to attack the others, even with his claws untied.

Gill now gives clients the option of having the lobster sedated with THC-infused smoke when ordering. Going forward, she wants to add a larger tank that will allow multiple lobsters to be sedated at the same time. “The animal is already going to be killed. It is far more humane to make it a kinder passage,” she says.
