New retail options for the cannabis industry will help create a more mature market

If you are lucky enough to live in a state where adult-use recreational marijuana has been made legal and licensed, you have probably shopped at, or at least noticed, retail cannabis dispensaries in various forms and guises. Two of the largest chains and websites, Jane’s and Leafly, have joined together to form a partnership with an eye on improving the retail sales experience for consumers.

Dispensaries get their products from a variety of providers all using different methods to identify and track their products. Leafly and Jane’s are now using powerful tools to sync online Commerce with store inventory, which has been a point of confusion and worry up until now.

Shoppers who are able to simply go online and shop for marijuana still run into the problem of having the online menus display the actual inventory of the shops. There is still no industry stand UPC barcode in the cannabis industry and large dispensaries often have products incoming using fast-moving SKUs from dozens of vendors. An SKU is a scannable bar code that allows shopkeepers the ability to track the movement of inventory.

The people at Leafly and Jane’s are seeking to alleviate this problem on both sides of the counter. At the same time, they hope to make it easier for both vendor and customer to find what they want, when they want it. It works with over 30 point-of-sale systems.

The system that Jane’s and Leafly are installing hopes to make the consumer’s online experience easier, faster and hassle-free and come with a lot of experience. Jane’s processed over 17 million orders and $2 billion in cannabis sales last year. It works with over 1800 dispensaries already and more are in the works. Leafly’s platform had over 120 million visitors to its online marketplace.
