The rapper and celebrity wants to help ensure federal cannabis reform stays on target

Jay-Z has recently launched a new drug awareness campaign through his first cannabis line, Monogram. Last Monday, this new cannabis brand from the rapper shared different ads intended to criticize the war on drugs, especially that which is faced by the Black community.

Jay-Z developed the campaign to give a larger voice to those who have suffered and who have been penalized for what is now a legal cannabis market. The campaign posters carry messages like, “Weed is a federal crime, even in the states where sex with farm animals isn’t,” “The war on drugs worked if systemic racism was the goal,” and “You can marry your first cousin in more states than you can buy recreational weed.”

In a statement, the rapper asserted, “Cannabis laws are out of date and disproportionately cruel and punishing when compared to the rest of the legal code. We still don’t have proper regulation for texting and driving in Missouri, but staying home and smoking weed will get you locked up.”

Jay-Z added, “Far too often, we forget that these are real people whose everyday lives and futures have been affected by this outdated legislature — people like Bryan Rone, who can no longer pursue a career in sales because of a cannabis-related conviction in 2003.”

In October of last year, Monogram was launched by the Brooklyn rapper, becoming the first development achieved after the partnership he formed with cannabis company Caliva in 2019.
