Indiana governor would support cannabis legalization, but only under one condition

Governor Eric Holcomb is opposed to cannabis, but would still approve legislation

It has already been more than evident that the Governor of Indiana is not personally a faithful supporter of marijuana legalization. Still, even so, he says he is willing to change his mind as long as one condition is met. Lawmakers who decide to pass a bill to establish the regulatory infrastructure for a legal cannabis market could receive the signature enacting the measure after federal prohibition comes to an end.

Hoosier State Governor Eric Holcomb spoke about cannabis policy during an interview released Tuesday. One of the main questions was based on whether he would oppose state lawmakers at least beginning the process of setting up a licensing structure to make way for legal cannabis businesses. The governor said it’s actually something he doesn’t mind at all and, in fact, would be willing to “flip the switch” on that measure. However, he isn’t willing to do so until federal law is reformed.

This process would become the only one of its kind that has ever been undertaken in other states, where lawmakers are charged with making rules on issues such as taxes and licensing without having a clear timetable for when implementation would occur since it would really depend on future congressional action. The Indiana Democratic Party, which recently pushed for marijuana legalization and called on state lawmakers to enact the reform, supported the Republican governor’s proposal.

In fact, Representative Sue Errington has been working for several weeks on a bill that Holcomb is aware of and says he is open to supporting. Indiana would then be subject to federal reform so that its residents would in the future have the opportunity to access marijuana legally.
