How cannabis affects the menstrual cycle

Women can find substantial relief from their monthly period through the use of cannabis

We know that mankind has made use of the cannabis plant for thousands of years. Early practitioners of herbal medicines counted on the cannabis plant as one of their most useful ‘herbs’ in their medicine bags.

It is not reaching too far to see that, in all likelihood, marijuana has been used to help women with menstrual cramps, pains and discomforts. After all, cannabis, “with its rich spectrum of phytocannabinoids such as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), has long been used in traditional medicine relating to fertility and reproduction.”

Modern scientists also have been discovering how the endocannabinoid system functions and just how important it is in regulating the “biological mechanisms controlling these fundamental processes.” But, it does not take a scientist to tell women that marijuana can reduce the anxiety and tension surrounding menstruation and that CBD oil can be very effective in alleviating painful cramps during the menstrual period.

It is written in the history books that the famous British Queen Victoria used marijuana to soothe her painful cramps during menstruation. Her personal physician was Doctor William B. O’Shaughnessy, one of the most prominent promoters of medical marijuana in his day, who, in fact, was later knighted by the Queen.

Despite the fact that many women of today continue to use cannabis as a treatment for menstrual discomfort, there have been few, if any, formalized studies of the cause and effect of cannabis on the female body. But THC can act as a powerful analgesic and antinociceptive agent, which stops the nerves from sensing pain signals at all. For a lady suffering from menstrual pain, that is often enough to know.
