The deal allows NIC to expand its professional licensing capabilities

It may seem like a strange marriage at first, but everything becomes clear upon closer examination. A company that concentrates on digital government services, NIC, Inc., has acquired Colorado-based cannabis company Complia. Complia is a provider of technology for government regulation of the hemp and cannabis industries and the newly-formed entity will see a greatly expanded cannabis solution for a number of states.

Complia offers different licensing capabilities, including dozens of tailored licensing services around the country. It offers an enterprise licensing and permitting platform in Illinois, as well as a custom cannabis regulatory solution for Oregon. It provides its services in four states so far and NIC’s licensing capabilities will give the new company an advantage in a changing regulatory environment.

NIC CEO and Chairman Harry Herington explains, “Licensing is a very important function of government. The Complia technology platform is extremely scalable and NIC will be able to expand its capabilities to provide licensing for other highly regulated industries.” He adds, “We have a long history of providing innovative, convenient licensing solutions for state government and their constituents. This is just another example of our mission to be a comprehensive service provider and trusted partner of government.”

The value of the acquisition was not given, but it is reportedly a good deal for everyone involved. Complia founder Alex Valvassori will become a NIC GM and states, “All of us at Complia are very excited to join the NIC family. NIC is known throughout the country as the leader of the digital government industry. Combining their citizen-centric, innovative solutions with Complia’s cannabis regulatory platform will only continue to reinforce that NIC is the best choice for government to provide industry-leading digital government solutions.”
