President Joe Biden now has the chance to advance cannabis research in the US

Last week closed with great news for the marijuana industry, especially for researchers who want to explore more closely the benefits the plant could have on all consumers. The US House of Representatives passed a bill aimed at allowing this group to study the actual marijuana that consumers are buying at dispensaries in states where it has already been legalized. This is clearly a good step towards being able to know exactly what the products that are consumed over the population actually cause, rather than using cannabis that is grown by the government.

The move comes just as several Democratic lawmakers in Congress are working together to promote several marijuana bills, including a legalization bill seeking federal acceptance that was approved two months ago by the House Judiciary Committee. In addition, as surprising as it may sound, there is a group of Republicans seeking to end the federal prohibition of cannabis and it is expected to be brought before the House soon.

The various efforts that are being made recently could bring big news for the industry before the end of 2021. The infrastructure measure that includes the provision for a broader investigation now goes to the president. This means that the secretary of transportation must work with the attorney general and the secretary of health and human services to develop a public report within two years of the bill’s enactment. That report should include various recommendations to allow scientists and researchers access to marijuana at the retail level to study drunk driving.
