The autism-related syndrome is treatable with medical marijuana

Asperger’s syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects 1 in 59 children in the US. It was first identified in 1944 and was categorized as a type of autism in 2013 and has no cure. In comparison to different types of autism included in the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) group, Asperger’s is usually distinguished by a higher intellectual capacity and symptoms that aren’t as severe as what are seen with other autistic patients. However, some of the symptoms are still severe enough to require treatment, and medical marijuana is being shown to be the perfect alternative.

All of the austism varieties included as part of ASD result in an impairment in social communication and interaction, restricted behavior, seizures, obsessive-compulsive disorders, self-injury desires (such as head banging) and more. They can also lead to epilepsy, anxiety, sleep disorders and depression. Antipsychotics can be prescribed for a lot of the symptoms, but all of them come with a long list of scary side effects. This is why medical marijuana is becoming the preferred treatment.

Marijuana compounds such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are showing great promise in treating a lot of ailments, including Asperger’s. There have been studies conducted specifically on the compounds and their effect on Asperger’s, as well as other forms of autism, and all have proven to offer better relief than lab-produced medication.

Fortunately, the marijuana industry as a whole has advanced significantly over the past couple of decades. It is no longer necessary to smoke marijuana to receive its effects and, in the case of autistic patients, smoking isn’t the preferred alternative. Solutions that are high in CBD and low in THC offer the best results, which means anything like vaping, edibles and other administrations with CBD oil are the go-to options.

Currently, seven states recognize autism as a qualifying medical condition for marijuana treatment. Eight others are said to be “autism-friendly,” which means physicians can prescribe medical marijuana in certain cases. Imagine what could have been done to better the lives of tens of thousands of children if cannabis hadn’t been demonized 100 years ago.
