Adult-use cannabis legalization makes strides in several states

This has been a good week for cannabis legalization across the US

In addition to the numerous states where marijuana for adults is already allowed, it looks like this week is an important step towards adding new ones to the list. July is about to begin, and with it, states like Connecticut, New Mexico, and Virginia are fine-tuning the final details to initiate laws legalizing the use and possession of marijuana by adults over the age of 21.

Once everything is enacted, it is estimated that millions of Americans, roughly 40% of the country, will be living in states where adult-use cannabis consumption is a permitted topic. “Legalization is now a reality for nearly half of the US population,” stated NORML. “As more jurisdictions continue to enact these common-sense regulatory policies, it is imperative that Congress stop stalling and amend federal law in a way that addresses this state/federal divide and respects the will of the voters in this growing number of states.”

In the case of New Mexico, legalization went into effect yesterday, which was made possible after it was approved in a special legislative session two months ago. Adults are allowed to possess two ounces and grow up to six plants in their homes for personal use if they wish.

As for Connecticut, legalization will begin the same day July arrives, meaning adults will be able to possess personal use amounts of marijuana (1.5 ounces) and equivalent amounts of cannabis concentrate without penalty starting tomorrow.

Virginia will also begin enforcing this new legalization law tomorrow, and its terms state that adults will be able to legally possess up to one ounce and grow up to four marijuana plants per household at home without penalty.

These states have already been joined by New York and New Jersey to make a total of five states in a matter of seven months, something that really shows how legalization and the cannabis industry are reaching an increasingly high peak.
