The “Stoner Cleanup Initiative” is helping to make the planet greener

Despite a name that doesn’t lend itself to the betterment of the marijuana community, the Stoner Cleanup Initiative has an awesome goal. The group’s volunteers are working to clean up the planet, one park at a time, and are campaigning for others to join them and help create a cleaner Earth while enjoying one of their favorite pastimes – cannabis.

The whole idea started through a Reddit post that showed some cannabis fans picking up trash in a park. It received 22,000 upvotes, according to the group’s website, and the idea took off. There have been similar cleanups at beaches, parks and other public facilities, as well as an initiative to become more proactive in recycling.

Subreddits have popped up to cover different geographic locations and to show support for the endeavors. One Reddit user stated, “I was out walking in the woods and I saw a bunch of plastic bags blowing around, so I took them and filled them with other trash during the rest of my walk, felt super good.”

Another added, “I live in Colorado—more specifically in Boulder—and here, a great deal of the highways and roads are adopted by local dispensaries. For those of you who don’t know what that means, you sign an agreement with the city and clean up your section of the road a certain number of times a year. It certainly changes the stigma seeing a sign that says, ‘this section of highway is adopted and maintained by The Village Green Society Dispensary’ or something of the sort. Needless to say, I think we can make this more than just a fad/trend, but rather a commonplace association—that stoners are ambassadors of the environment.”

Ambassadors of the environment has a nice ring to it. In addition to the everyday efforts led by cannabis consumers, there could also be a single day picked out when all groups would police their local areas and turn it into a global affair.
